A rice seller and farmer in Danhassan town, Kura Local Government Area of Kano State, has expressed satisfaction over the recent drop in rice prices while lamenting the escalating cost of fertilizer, which he said is affecting farming activities.

Speaking in an exclusive interview with Nigerian Tracker correspondent, the farmer, identified as Aminu, said the price of rice has significantly reduced compared to last year, offering relief to both farmers and consumers.

“Normal rice for cooking is now sold at â¦2,500 per mudu, while the variety used for making swallow (tuwo) is being sold at â¦2,900,” Aminu revealed. “Last year, both types were sold at between â¦4,000 and â¦4,200 per mudu, but the prices have now dropped by nearly half,” he added.

However, despite the good news on rice prices, Aminu raised concern over the rising cost of fertilizers, which he said is becoming unbearable for many farmers.

According to him, the price of Urea fertilizer has jumped from â¦35,000 to â¦40,000 per bag, a development he described as discouraging, especially for small-scale farmers who are already struggling with limited resources.

In addition to Urea, Aminu said the NPK fertilizer another essential input in rice cultivation is now being sold at between â¦55,000 and â¦58,000 per bag, depending on the type and location.

He called on the government at all levels to urgently intervene by subsidizing the cost of fertilizers and providing support for farmers to ensure continued food production and affordability for the Nigerian populace.
