Brigadier General Timothy Opurum, Commander of the 1 Brigade, led the humanitarian initiative, emphasizing that the outreach was designed to strengthen civil-military relations and reaffirm the Army’s commitment to the health and welfare of local populations. He made this known while addressing journalists at the venue.

The outreach, which took place at Government Day Secondary School, Rawayya, offered a range of free medical services including consultations, medications, eye screening, blood pressure checks, and health counselling. According to the Army’s medical team, hundreds of residents, including women and the elderly, benefited from the services.

“We don’t only conduct kinetic operations; we also engage in non-kinetic efforts like this to connect with our people,” Brigadier General Opurum said during his remarks, highlighting the Army’s dual role in both security and community development.

He further explained that the initiative aligns with the Nigerian Army’s broader civil-military cooperation strategy and reflects the spirit of NADCEL 2025, which marks 162 years since the establishment of the Nigerian Army.
In addition to the medical services, the Army also distributed free exercise books and other educational materials to students of the host school. According to the school’s principal, the gesture was warmly received and would go a long way in supporting the students’ academic needs.

The District Head of Rawayya, Alhaji Abubakar Rashi, expressed deep appreciation for the outreach, describing it as the first of its kind in the community. “We are sincerely grateful to the Army. This is a great gesture that will never be forgotten,” Rashi said in an interview, offering prayers for the Army’s continued success in addressing insecurity in the region.

Several beneficiaries also shared their gratitude, with many describing the outreach as timely and impactful. One elderly woman, who received treatment for high blood pressure, told reporters that she had not seen a doctor in over a year and praised the Army for bringing healthcare to their doorstep.
