In a fiery and unflinching statement released on his verified Facebook page, Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Information and Strategy, has dismissed the recent defection of some political figures to the so-called “hijacked” African Democratic Congress (ADC), branding them as “desperados hungry for power” and warning Nigerians not to be deceived by their theatrics.

“Some members of the hijacked ADC, who were reported as members of the APC, left the APC years and months ago,” Onanuga wrote. “Let the public not be deceived by the opposition’s narrative about their relevance or whether the APC will mourn their departure.”

Onanuga minced no words in naming and shaming the defectors, starting with former Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi. “Amaechi’s soul left the APC in 2022 after losing the presidential primary to President Tinubu,” he declared, suggesting that Amaechi’s political loyalty had long evaporated.

Turning his attention to Abubakar Malami, the former Attorney-General of the Federation, Onanuga noted that Malami “has never hidden his estrangement from the APC since Tinubu assumed leadership and since he lost the governorship bid in Kebbi.” According to him, Malami’s silence and distance speak volumes about his political disengagement.

Onanuga also took a swipe at Hadi Sirika, the former Minister of Aviation, who is now aligned with the ADC. “Sirika is facing trial for contract splitting and other allegations,” he stated, implying that his defection may be a desperate attempt to escape accountability.

The statement didn’t spare Rauf Aregbesola, the former Osun governor, either. “The renegade Aregbesola committed anti-party in the last Osun election and was expelled as an unfit APC member,” Onanuga revealed, accusing him of betrayal and disloyalty.

Veteran politicians Kashim Imam and Chief John Odigie Oyegun were also called out. “Imam abandoned the APC after failing to secure the vice-presidential ticket in 2022,” Onanuga wrote. “Chief Oyegun, a former party chairman, also lost interest in the APC and has been a foundational member of this coalition since its inception.”

Onanuga issued a stern warning to Nigerians: “Keep your eyes wide open. A political party with no clear agenda or ideology—whose members are united only by their hatred for President Tinubu—cannot be good for our country. It will only set us back by decades.”

He described the defectors as “desperados, hungry for power, not for the benefit of Nigerians but for themselves,” accusing them of seeking power at all costs because they “cannot endure another four years in the political wilderness or be banished to political winter and irrelevance.”

In a final note of confidence, Onanuga predicted the inevitable collapse of the coalition: “What is certain is that the group will soon unravel due to their irreconcilable personal and political ambitions.”

As the political landscape heats up, Onanuga’s statement serves as both a rallying cry for APC loyalists and a cautionary tale for Nigerians watching the unfolding drama.
