In a statement signed by the Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs, Comrade Ibrahim Abdullahi Waiya, the government emphasized that it never stated, suggested, or implied that private citizens, philanthropists, or corporate bodies were not allowed to donate to victims of the disaster.

“The government deeply appreciates the spirit of solidarity, empathy, and generosity demonstrated by some concerned Nigerians, especially philanthropists and corporate bodies, since the unfortunate incident occurred,” Waiya stated.

To ensure transparency and fairness in the disbursement of aid, the government explained that it established a High-Powered Committee and a dedicated bank account to coordinate and manage donations.

“This initiative is not intended to discourage contributions from the general public,” the commissioner said. “Rather, it aims to prevent duplication, mismanagement, or misdirection of relief materials and financial aid.”

He noted that the mechanism put in place is designed to ensure that “every kobo or material support reaches those who truly suffered losses—traders whose shops, goods, and means of livelihood were destroyed in the inferno.”

Waiya further highlighted that the administration of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf has already committed over N2 billion for a comprehensive intervention. This includes the reconstruction and expansion of the affected market, acquisition of additional land, establishment of a fire station, and installation of solar-powered streetlights.

“The reconstruction is not only about rebuilding but modernizing the market to ensure long-term resilience and economic activity, especially for small business owners,” he said.

The commissioner also disclosed plans for a market management structure that will oversee the operations of the revamped complex, promoting transparency, orderliness, and sustainability going forward.

The state government reiterated its unwavering commitment to the victims and welcomed well-intentioned contributions from across the country, urging donors to utilize the established official channels to avoid confusion, politicization, or exploitation of the situation.

“We thank the public for their understanding and continued support,” Waiya concluded.
