<p>This was disclosed in a press release signed by the Honourable Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs in Kano State, Comrade Ibrahim Abdullahi Waiya, on Monday, June 16, 2025. According to the statement, the award is being conferred by the national leadership of the NUJ under the stewardship of its President, Comrade Alhassan Yahaya.</p>
<p>Comrade Waiya stated that the NUJ selected Governor Yusuf for the honour due to his “outstanding contributions to national development, promotion of good governance, and unwavering support for press freedom and the advancement of the media profession in Nigeria.” He also noted that the union considered the Governor’s leadership style and his dedication to public service as part of the justification for the award.</p>

<p>The award presentation is scheduled to take place during the NUJ’s 70th Anniversary Awards and Gala Night, which will be held on Saturday, 21st June 2025, in Abuja. <p>In response to the announcement, the Kano State Ministry of Information and Internal Affairs praised the NUJ for what it called a “noble gesture,” reaffirming the state government’s commitment to transparency, accountability, and media freedom.</p>

<p>“The Kano State Government remains committed to upholding the values of democracy through transparency, accountability, and respect for press freedom,” the statement read.</p>
<p>On behalf of the government and people of Kano State, Comrade Waiya congratulated Governor Yusuf on the recognition and expressed gratitude to the NUJ for acknowledging his impactful leadership and positive relationship with the media.</p>
<p>Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, who assumed office in 2023, has consistently emphasized the role of the media in deepening democratic governance, often engaging journalists constructively and ensuring press access to government activities.</p>
