<p>The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has expressed deep sorrow over the tragic loss of 22 athletes and sports officials from Kano State who died in a road accident while returning from the National Youth Games held in Abeokuta, Ogun State.</p>
<p>In a statement issued on Thursday and signed by the Acting President of the NLC, Comrade Audu T. Amba, the Congress extended its condolences to the government and people of Kano State, especially Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, over what it described as a &#8220;national tragedy.&#8221;</p>
<p>“These were young people who had their lives brutally cut short in their prime,” Amba said, mourning the loss of vibrant youth who represented the state with pride. “Our hearts are with their inconsolable families and friends who are yet to come to terms with this cruel reality,” he added.</p>

<p>While praying for the repose of the souls of the victims, the NLC called for a full-scale investigation into the circumstances surrounding the accident, which occurred just 50 kilometres from the state capital.</p>
<p>Amba questioned whether the fatal crash was due to technical failure, driver fatigue, reckless driving, or other possible causes. “Investigation should go all the way to the source of take-off… immediate and possibly remote causes,” he said, emphasizing that the findings must be thorough.</p>

<p>The acting president also called for the interrogation of relevant individuals connected to the journey, including the Transport Officer, fellow drivers, and any others involved in planning and executing the trip.</p>
<p>According to Kano State officials, the victims were part of the state’s contingent to the National Youth Games and included athletes, journalists, medical staff, and sports administrators. The accident has thrown the state into mourning and triggered widespread calls for reforms in travel safety for government-sponsored events.</p>

<p>The NLC concluded its message with a solemn appeal for improved safety standards and oversight in the transportation of athletes and other officials in future engagements.</p>
