In a significant breakthrough in Nigeria’s counter-terrorism campaign, troops of the Nigerian Army under Operation HADIN KAI have neutralized a high-ranking Boko Haram/Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) commander, Amir Abu Fatima, and several of his lieutenants during a precision strike in Kukawa, Northern Borno State.

The Nigerian Army disclosed this in an official statement posted on its verified Facebook page on Thursday, May 30, 2025. The military said the operation was executed following credible intelligence that pinpointed the terrorist enclave, where Abu Fatima was coordinating attacks and planning further atrocities against civilians and security forces.

According to the Army, the elite Special Forces unit launched a coordinated assault on the hideout, resulting in a fierce exchange of gunfire. “During the intense firefight, Amir Abu Fatima, a notorious commander with a â¦100 million bounty on his head, sustained fatal gunshot wounds and was confirmed dead at the scene,” the statement read.

In addition to Abu Fatima, the military confirmed the elimination of his deputy commander, several explosives experts, and multiple other insurgents. The operation also led to the recovery of a cache of arms and bomb-making materials. Items retrieved include several AK-47 rifles, magazines loaded with ammunition, improvised explosive device (IED) components, and other military-grade ordnance.

The Army emphasized that the mission was executed with surgical precision and without any casualties among the Nigerian troops. “This operation is a testament to the effectiveness of our ongoing intelligence-led counter-terrorism strategy and the dedication of our gallant forces,” the Army said.

The successful elimination of Abu Fatima marks a major milestone in the ongoing effort to degrade the leadership structure of Boko Haram and ISWAP. Abu Fatima was reportedly instrumental in orchestrating attacks across the Lake Chad Basin and northern parts of Borno, and his death is expected to cause significant disruption in the operational capacity of the insurgent groups.

“This victory sends a clear message to all remnants of terror: their days are numbered,” the Army stated, reaffirming the Armed Forces of Nigeria’s unwavering commitment to restoring peace and security to the Northeast and other parts of the country affected by insurgency.

The Army also released graphic evidence and photos from the operation, showcasing the recovered weapons and the destruction of the terrorist base, further underlining the success and impact of the strike.

The military urged the public to remain vigilant and continue providing actionable intelligence to support ongoing operations. “We appreciate the support of the local communities and call for continued cooperation as we work to permanently dismantle terrorist networks in Nigeria,” the statement concluded.
