The Department of State Services (DSS) has released Zubair, the organiser of the pro-democracy group, the Take-It-Back Movement (TIB) in Kano State, who was arrested on Thursday.

Zubair was reportedly released in Abuja on Friday night and is currently on his way to Kano. However, the DSS operatives withheld his phone, which has not yet been returned to him.

“Zubair was released yesterday night by the DSS in Abuja. He is on his way to Kano now. They are still holding his phone,” a source revealed.

The TIB, which initially raised the alarm about Zubair’s arrest, stated that the reasons for his detention remain unclear. However, sources suggest his arrest might be linked to a Facebook post where he allegedly criticised the government.

In a statement, the TIB said, “The organiser of TIB in Kano, Zubair, was arrested by the DSS earlier today. The reason for his arrest remains unknown.

“But sources informed us it was connected with a Facebook post critical of the government, and the activist has been moved to Abuja.

“We demand his immediate and unconditional release now!”

There has been a persistent and widespread clampdown on dissenting voices in Nigeria by political officeholders at local, state, and federal levels.

The current Nigerian government, led by President Bola Tinubu, has faced accusations of targeting activists, media practitioners, and individuals who dare to criticise the authorities.
