The Kano Peace Committee (KPC) has commended the leadership of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), Kano State Branch, for shelving their plan to embark on mass action following the intervention of the Executive Governor of Kano State, Engineer Abba Kabir Yusuf.
The intervention was in response to a rift between Hajiya Amina Abdullahi Sani, the Hon. Commissioner for Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction, and the NMA, Kano State Branch, over an alleged assault on a medical doctor at her duty post in one of the state’s hospitals.
In a statement signed by Amb. Ibrahim Waiya, Convener and Head of Secretariat of the Kano Peace Committee said the incident led to the NMA’s demand for the sacking of the Commissioner. However, the Kano State Branch has now heeded the Governor’s request and resolved to shelve the planned mass action. “We commend the leadership of the NMA for the demonstrated high sense of maturity, responsibility, and humanity,” the KPC stated.
The KPC also praised Governor Yusuf for his leadership and maturity in handling the matter. “We share the pain of the aggrieved medical personnel and pray that the Almighty Allah shall continue to reward the huge sacrifice our medical personnel make in the state,” the committee added.
The KPC emphasized that the sacrifice of the medical personnel should not go unnoticed or ignored and deserves reciprocal behavior. “While we once again appreciate the NMA leadership in Kano State for reconsidering their earlier position on the planned mass action, let us continue to remain committed to the service of humanity as professionals guided by ethical principles, values, and practices, with saving lives as the top priority,” the statement concluded.
