The Arewa APC Merger Group has formally petitioned the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) to investigate allegations of palliative mismanagement involving high-ranking officials in the Kano State Government. The group’s letter, addressed to the ICPC Chairman, highlights disturbing reports of food items intended for vulnerable groups being diverted and rebagged for resale in the market.

According to the petition, signed by Head of the Group Musa Mujahid Zaitawa said the Palliative Distribution Compliance Committee, led by the Secretary to the State Government, Dr. Abdullahi Baffa Bichi, and the Chief of Staff to the Governor, Mr. Shehu Wada Sagagi, has been implicated in these unethical practices. The group alleges that on December 3, 2023, Governor Yusuf discovered a warehouse in Sharada Industrial Estate where maize and rice, meant for palliatives, were being illegally stored and repackaged for commercial purposes.

According to Zaitawa Despite the Governor’s directive for an immediate police investigation, there has been little progress in holding those responsible accountable. Although two suspects, including a Senior Special Assistant to the Governor, have been arrested, the Arewa APC Merger Group claims that the investigation has stalled, and no further actions have been taken.

Zaitawa also raises new allegations against the Chief of Staff, Mr. Shehu Wada Sagagi, accusing him of misappropriating rice palliative provided by the Federal Government. It is alleged that these food items were stored in his residence in Gandun Albasa Quarters rather than being distributed to the intended beneficiaries, including physically challenged individuals and widows of security personnel.

Given the seriousness of these allegations, the Arewa APC Merger Group urges the ICPC to conduct a comprehensive investigation into the activities of the Palliative Distribution Compliance Committee and all individuals involved. The group calls for immediate action to ensure that those responsible for these acts are brought to justice and to restore the integrity of the palliative distribution process in Kano State.
