The Project Coordinator of Stallion Times Media Services, Isiyaku Ahmed, stated that good governance involves effective engagement with the government and civil society to establish transparency and accountability.

The roundtable discussion, involving the media, civil society organizations, government, and the private sector in Kano State, was held at the Press Center in Kano on Thursday.

Ahmed noted that citizen engagement in Nigeria suffers due to severe public mistrust in the government’s capacity to implement policies that reflect citizens’ interests.

“Good governance is the system by which an organization is controlled and operates, and the mechanisms by which it, and its people, are held to account,” he said.

According to him, the project also aims to galvanize citizens to be more involved in generating input for budget and service delivery.

The aims of the roundtable discussions on good governance, “Get Involved, Dialogue, and Make Improvement,” funded by the MacArthur Foundation, are to sensitize those in government and the private sector to improve the provision of basic infrastructure and essential services to citizens.

The roundtable discussions focused on building the capacity of stakeholders on structures and strategies for effective engagement with state and non-state actors, including the private sector, to encourage active citizen participation in governance and enhance the quality of service delivery.
