KANO, Nigeria – A widespread shortage of power across Nigeria is posing challenges for citizens especially during Ramadan, prompting calls for collective action from energy authorities.

Abubakar Yusuf, Acting MD and CEO of Kano Electricity Distribution Company (KEDCO), addressed the media at their headquarters in Kano, with a NIGERIAN TRACKER correspondent in attendance.

KEDCO, responsible for distribution in Kano, Jigawa, and Katsina, emphasized their commitment to ensuring reliable power distribution despite facing constraints in supply allocation. With an average of 180 megawatts received, significantly below the region’s capacity, the shortfall impacts service delivery.

Yusuf highlighted multiple factors contributing to the power deficit, including vandalism, underpayment of bills, and electricity theft. The recent fire outbreak at Dan Agundi further exacerbated distribution challenges, underscoring the need for enhanced security measures and community cooperation.

Acknowledging the government’s efforts to address shortages, Yusuf stressed the importance of customer engagement and protection of energy assets. He announced plans for future investments in solar plants within franchise areas to bolster transmission capabilities.

Expressing regret for the inconvenience caused to customers, KEDCO urged vigilance and support in combating vandalism, with a whistleblower policy in place. As the core investor, Future Energy Africa aims to enhance power infrastructure, a crucial step towards improving service efficiency.

As Ramadan worshipers navigate power constraints during this holy month, the appeal for collective responsibility underscores the urgency of addressing Nigeria’s energy challenges to ensure uninterrupted worship and daily life activities.
