The Kano Education Summit 2024, themed “Towards Strengthening Retention and Completion of Girls’ Education,” was convened in collaboration with the Adolescent Health Information Project (AHIP) and Christian Aid.
Mairo Bello, the Executive Director of AHIP, underscored the importance of education in societal development, stating, “Education is the first foundation for everything.” She emphasized that education serves as the cornerstone for various disciplines, including sociology, and is fundamental to progress.
Addressing the summit, Umar Haruna Doguwa, the Kano State Commissioner of Education, reaffirmed the government’s commitment to prioritizing girl child education.
He highlighted Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s intervention in reopening 32 girls’ boarding schools previously closed by the previous administration. Doguwa noted that the closure had resulted in 22,000 girls being out of school, underscoring the significance of the government’s efforts to address educational disparities.
Professor Garba Saad elaborated on the challenges posed by the high influx of migrants in Kano, which has complicated educational programs. He commended Governor Kabir Yusuf for extending educational support to neighboring states, demonstrating Kano’s commitment to fostering regional educational cooperation.
The summit provided a platform for stakeholders to discuss strategies for enhancing girls’ education retention and completion rates in Kano State. It underscored the pivotal role of education in empowering girls and advancing societal development.
AHIP and Christian aids proactive measures in addressing educational disparities reflect the state’s commitment to promoting inclusive and equitable access to education for all residents, especially girls.
