Abbas Yushau Yusuf
In a twist of events following the Supreme Court judgment that affirmed the victory of Kano state Governor, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, on January 12, 2024, the political atmosphere in Kano has changed.
On Thursday, January 18, the national chairman of the All Progressives Congress and the immediate past Governor of Kano state, Dr Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, led a delegation of APC stakeholders in Kano to the Presidential villa and entered into a closed-door meeting with President Bola Ahmad Tinubu.
Those sighted in the photograph after the President’s meeting with the Kano APC leadership are the National Chairman of the APC, Dr Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, Kano APC Governorship candidate in the 2023 General elections Nasiru Yusuf Gawuna, and his Deputy Gubernatorial candidate Murtala Sule Garo. Two state ministers from Kano, Abdullahi Tijjani Gwarzo and Dr Mariya Mahmud Bunkure, and Kano APC chairman Abdullahi Abbas were also present. Others included Deputy Senate President Barau I Jibrin, representative Abubakar Bichi, and the last son of the APC national chairman, Muhammad Abdullahi Umar Ganduje.
Non-indigenes in Kano Unite in Prayer for Dr Nasir Gawuna’s Success at Supreme Court
An impeccable source from the APC circle told NIGERIAN TRACKER that when the Kano APC bigwigs met President Tinubu, he commended them for their efforts in contributing to the success of the APC. Regarding the issue of the party and its fortune in Kano, the source said President Tinubu urged the party leadership to go and reinvigorate the party in Kano by repositioning itself so that it will regain its lost glory.
Concerning the issue of the Supreme Court judgment that affirmed Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, the source told NIGERIAN TRACKER that the President told the APC leadership that he has never interfered with the Supreme Court Judgement supporting either of the party’s.
On the political fate of the APC Governorship ticket, Alhaji Nasiru Yusuf Gawuna, the Governorship candidate, and his Deputy Murtala Sule Garo, the President told them that he will see what he can do in compensating them, but he did not exactly say when he is going to do it.
The president further told them he has no negotiations with anybody or political group regarding the affirmation of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf as the Governor of Kano state by the court of appeal.
On March 18th, 2023, the New Nigeria People’s Party governorship candidate Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf defeated Alhaji Nasiru Yusuf Gawuna of APC. Abba Kabir Yusuf polled 1 million nineteen thousand votes against Nasiru Yusuf Gawuna’s 890 thousand votes.
However, the APC went to the tribunal even after its Governorship candidate Gawuna congratulated Abba Kabir Yusuf of NNPP. On September 20, 2023, the tribunal sitting in Kano nullified Governor Abba’s election on the ground of invalid 165 thousand votes and urged INEC to issue a certificate of return to Gawuna.
Dissatisfied with the judgment, Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf went to the appellate court, which affirmed the previous judgment of the tribunal on November 17th. Again dissatisfied with the appellate court’s judgment, Governor Yusuf approached the supreme court, and on January 12, 2024, it quashed the judgment of the lower courts and affirmed Abba Kabir Yusuf as the duly elected Governor of Kano state.
