Gov. Mai Mala Buni of Yobe has charged local government chairmen to ensure that farmers and herders co-exist peacefully in the state.
Buni made this known in Damaturu while inaugurating caretaker committee chairmen of the 17 local government areas of the state.
He told the chairmen to pay special attention to farmers/grazers relationship at this period of farm harvest, the migration of herdsmen and the general harmony at their respective local government areas in the state.
Buni warned the chairmen that government will not condone any act capable of breaching peace among farmers and grazers in the rural communities.
“Grazers are advised to avoid trespass on farmlands that are yet to be harvested. On the other hand, farmers should not block the cattle routes to hamper free movement of livestock.
“As we strive to improve food sufficiency and security in the state, l urge you to support farmers in your respective local government areas to embrace irrigation farming.
“On this note, I hereby direct the Ministry of Agriculture to map out effective and practical strategy for partnership with the local government councils for very successful irrigation programmes and projects across the state”,said Governor Buni.
He advised the local government chairmen to imbibe the principles of accountability, transparency, and due process to be on the same page with this administration, and with commitment to the execution of people-oriented policies and programmes to improve the lives of the people.
