In a press release issued today, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced the suspension of elections in certain locations within Kogi State due to reported incidents of electoral malpractices.

The reported malpractices, particularly the completion of result sheets before voting, have been observed in Adavi, Ajaokuta, Ogori/Magongo, Okehi, and Okene Local Government Areas. The most severe infractions were noted in Ogori/Magongo, affecting nine out of 10 Registration Areas.

The Commission strongly condemns these incidents, deeming them entirely unacceptable. It emphasizes that any result not originating from the Commission’s established process at the Polling Units will not be accepted.

As a response to the reported malpractices, the election in the nine Wards in Ogori/Magongo Local Government Area—specifically Eni, Okibo, Okesi, Ileteju, Aiyeromi, Ugugu, Obinoyin, Obatgben, and Oturu—is currently suspended. Investigations into incidents in other Local Government Areas are underway, and the outcomes, along with the way forward, will be disclosed within the next 24 hours.

While the investigative processes are ongoing, the Commission is diligently following the audit trail of personnel and materials to identify any individuals who may have played a role in undermining the electoral process. The Commission possesses comprehensive records of all officials deployed at various levels, including supervisors, monitors, technical staff, and polling unit officials, as well as records of election materials issued to them. Appropriate sanctions will be applied where necessary.

INEC reassures voters in Kogi State that their votes are protected, and their democratic choices will be respected. The Commission remains committed to upholding the integrity of the electoral process and ensuring a free and fair election
