– The Nationwide League One (NLO) Super Cup, a football tournament with a strong focus on the business aspects of the sport, has officially commenced in Owerri. The event aims to bring together football enthusiasts to discuss the commercial side of the game.
Hassan Abdullahi Garo, a board member of the Kano Football Association and the Chief Executive Officer of the Nationwide League, announced this initiative during a recent media briefing in Kano.
He emphasized his commitment to serving in the sports sector and shared his enthusiasm for this new venture.
“We have sixteen centers across the country where matches will be held, and participants from these centers have now gathered in Imo State.
Each center’s winner will earn an invitation to the super league, which has a primary focus on nurturing young talents,” Garo stated.
With over 300 clubs , the tournament has attracted foreign scouts who arrived in Owerri ahead of the event. The NLO board has entered into agreements to provide support, particularly to clubs unfamiliar with player marketing strategies.
Garo stressed the importance of exploring additional avenues to support football clubs, highlighting that many Southern clubs are successfully sponsored by banks and corporate organizations, reducing their reliance on government funding. He also mentioned that corporate entities in Kano are keen to engage in football sponsorship opportunities.
Rilwanu Idris Malikawa, a prominent figure in football development, expressed his appreciation for the initiative, stating, “This is a good initiative, and we will collaborate effectively to make it a success.”
The briefing was attended by Sport Journalists from Kano.
