KANO, Nigeria – In a bid to promote inclusivity and support individuals living with HIV/AIDS, the Kano State Agency for the Control of AIDS (KSACA) has announced a significant milestone. Dr. Usman Bashir, the Director General of KSACA, revealed that the agency has successfully secured a dedicated slot for People Living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA) in the state who are ready to embark on the journey of matrimony.
During a press interview held on Thursday, Dr. Usman Bashir elaborated on the agency’s preparations for the upcoming mass wedding. He emphasized that KSACA, in partnership with the HISBA Board, will meticulously screen all intended couples to ensure their health status is compatible for marriage.
Despite the current prevalence rate of HIV/AIDS in the state standing at 0.6% according to the NAIIS Survey 2018, Dr. Bashir highlighted that nearly 40,000 individuals are currently receiving medication for the disease in Kano. Efforts are also underway to screen an additional 80,000 Persons living with the Disease, based on current population projections, who will receive free medication upon diagnosis.
Dr. Bashir underscored that due to the availability of free medications facilitated by the government and supporting partners, HIV/AIDS is becoming a more manageable condition. He further emphasized that research has demonstrated the potential for healthy outcomes when a client living with HIV, under proper medication, enters into marriage. Such unions often result in the birth of healthy babies unaffected by HIV/AIDS, a result attributed to the Prevention of Mother to Child Transmission technique (PMTCT).
Recent support from the government of Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf has empowered KSACA to procure 3rd Line drugs (Salvage Line) for people living with HIV/AIDS in the state. These drugs, which are usually provided by the Federal Government but are currently unavailable nationwide, will enhance sustainable provisions for clients in the state.
Dr. Usman Bashir urged individuals to be aware of their HIV/AIDS status, highlighting the availability of free medication across the state. Early treatment and proper management have significantly transformed the virus from a once-deadly ailment into a manageable condition.
The Director General expressed appreciation for Governor Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf’s unwavering support in advancing health services and standards within the state.
