Rimin Hamza, a small town nestled within the Tarauni Local Government area in Kano North Western Nigeria , was plunged into grief as Mahmud Abdullahi, a resident of the town, lost his 16-year-old daughter, Fiddausi Abdullahi, due to hunger-related complications.

The heart-wrenching incident, which occurred last Friday, has cast a harsh spotlight on the dire circumstances faced by many families in the wake of rising food prices and the removal of fuel subsidies.

Mahmud Abdullahi, who earns a living by guarding tricycles, is a father of six children and is married to a wife. The devastating loss of their daughter has left the family in a state of profound grief.

Rahma Radio Correspondent a private Radio station based in Kano Tukur S Tukur reports that , the family had reached a point where they could not afford to put food on their table, a direct consequence of the soaring food prices that followed the recent removal of fuel subsidies on May 29, 2023.

In an effort to alleviate their hunger, Mahmud Abdullahi decided to purchase three cups of Ghari, a staple food commonly consumed in the region. However, tragedy struck when the children consumed the Ghari, and they were afflicted by a severe bout of diarrhoea. Fiddausi, the 16-year-old daughter, developed excruciating stomach pain. Frantic efforts were made to rush her to the hospital, but sadly, she passed away on her way.

Medical experts have attributed Fiddausi’s untimely demise to the severe hunger she was experiencing, exacerbated by the consumption of the Ghari.

The incident underscores the perilous situation faced by numerous Nigerians in the aftermath of the fuel subsidy removal. With the cost of living skyrocketing and the price of essential food items soaring to unattainable heights, millions of families across the country find themselves struggling to put food on their plates.

The removal of fuel subsidies by President Bola Ahmad Tinubu has had a cascading effect on the economy, leading to widespread inflation and a surge in the cost of basic necessities.

As the nation grapples with the ramifications of this policy change, voices of discontent and anguish are growing louder. Citizens from all walks of life are uniting in their calls for urgent government intervention to address the escalating food crisis and prevent further tragedies like the one that befell the Abdullahi family.

The loss of Fiddausi Abdullahi serves as a stark reminder of the urgent need for comprehensive measures to alleviate the hardships faced by ordinary Nigerians in these trying times. As the nation mourns this young life lost to hunger, it is hoped that the tragedy will spark meaningful action to mitigate the effects of the economic challenges that have befallen the country
