Abuja, Nigeria – The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has refuted a declaration of winner in the Adamawa Governorship election by the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) when the process has not been concluded.

The commission described the REC’s action as a usurpation of the power of the Returning Officer and declared it null, void and of no effect. Consequently, the collation of results of the supplementary election has been suspended.

The affected individuals, including the REC and the Returning Officer, have been invited to the Commission’s Headquarters in Abuja for immediate clarification.

Barr. Festus Okoye, the National Commissioner in charge of Information and Voter Education, made this known in a brief statement issued on Sunday. He also promised a more detailed statement to follow shortly.

The Adamawa Governorship supplementary election was conducted on Saturday with results from some polling units already announced. However, the final collation of results was still ongoing when the REC purportedly made the declaration.

INEC has been applauded for its swift action in addressing the issue and ensuring the integrity of the electoral process
