POLITICS DIGEST – A Commissioner nominee that appeared before the Kano State House of Assembly for screening, on Monday, actually skipped the mandatory National Youth Service Corps, NYSC, one-year service program, four years ago after completing his medical studies in China, Politics Digest reports.
The nominee, Yusuf Jibril, who has been affixing the title of a (medical) doctor in his name, and also in the curriculum vitae he submitted to the Kano Assembly lawmakers for screening, didn’t also sit for the compulsory Medical and Dental Council Examination, for medical graduates.
The Exam, prepared for medical students that studied in foreign countries, licenses young physicians to practice medicine in Nigeria.
POLITICS DIGEST exclusively gathered that Jibril ‘shunned’ the NYSC service despite graduating from Shenyang Medical School, China, in 2018, at the age of 27.
He further continued to affix the ‘Dr’ title in his CV, as sighted by this newspaper, while he neither sat for nor passed the Medical Council Examination.
When asked by a member of the Kano Assembly over his failure to participate in NYSC, during his screening, Jibril answered by saying ‘NO’.
And concerning the Medical Council Exam he also didn’t take, the Commissioner nominee, told the Kano lawmakers, “Since after I came back from China, I kept my certificate aside. So, I didn’t do anything of such”.
The Member representing Bebeji Constituency, Abubakar Uba Galadima, Politics Digest gathered, pleaded with his colleagues and the Speaker, in a secret sitting, not to embarrass the Governor by disqualifying Yusuf.
Galadima, suggested that Jibril’s name be re-sent to the Assembly with only his secondary school credentials, excluding the Chinese medical school and any other post-secondary institution certificate.
“Yusuf Jibril should not have included his MBBS degree in the curriculum vitae he submitted to us to avoid being disqualified,” said a Member of the State Assembly that pleaded for anonymity.
The Nigerian law stipulates that the NYSC service exercise is mandatory on any Nigerian below 30. Hence, Jibril, who is now 31, but graduated from the University at the age of 27, should not have skipped the NYSC service.
In addition to being a requirement for government and private sector jobs in Nigeria, the enabling law prescribes punishment for anyone who absconds from the scheme or forges its certificates.
In the build-up to the 2019 general elections, the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) disqualified then Minister of Communications, Adebayo Shittu, from participating in the Oyo State governorship primary, following an exclusive PREMIUM TIMES’ report that showed that he skipped the NYSC.
Yusuf Jibril hails from Rurum town of Rano Local Government Area. He attended Rurum Central Primary School, between 1994 to 2000. He then had his post-primary education at Government Junior Secondary School Rurum, between 2000 to 2003.
Jibril further attended Dawakin Kudu Science College, and then, Shenyang Medical School for his medical degree, between 2012 to 2018.
Last week, Ganduje nominated him and also forwarded his name to the Kano State Assembly for confirmation as a Commissioner.
