Former governor of Kano State Malam Ibrahim Shekarau has refused to grant audience to the deputy governor of Kano State and anointed governorship candidate of the APC, Nasiru Gawuna.

Mr Gawuna had served as chairman of Nassarawa Local Government Council when Mr Shekarau was governor between 2003 and 2007.

DAILY NIGERIAN gathered that Mr Shekarau had concluded arrangement to make formal announcement for his defection to New Nigeria Peoples Party, NNPP, on Saturday.

Worried by the mass defection that hit the APC in the wake of selection of Mr Gawuna and Murtala Garo as consensus governorship and deputy governorship candidates, the party is making concerted efforts to stop the exodus.

Mr Gawuna, according to inside sources, visited the Mundubawa Road residence of the former governor in company of a few close associates on Tuesday night.

“When he came, Mallam [Shekarau] was alerted about his presence, but Mallam refused to see him. Gawuna was later told that Mallam was deep asleep after taking his medication,” said a source at the Mundubawa residence.

DAILY NIGERIAN gathered that the former governor, who now represents Kano Central Senatorial District, jetted to Abuja on Wednesday morning.

Sources close to Mr Shekarau said that he had reached a point of no return in his decision to dump the APC.
