Over 400 Thousand Voters Yet To Collect PVC’s In Kano

Four hundred thousand and four thousand two hundred and one voters are yet to collect their permanent voters card as the 2023 general elections draws nearer.

The resident electoral commissioner in Kano Professor Riskwa Arabi Shehu made the statement on Tuesday while declaring a one day sensitization workshop for Journalists organized by correspondent Chapel and sponsored by the Independent National electoral commission in Kano.

Professor Riskwa Arabi Shehu said journalists are playing a vital role in sensitizing voters during the general elections and the need to sensitize Kano voters at this crucial time becomes necessary.

He said before the 2019 general elections there are 600 thousand PVC’S that were not collected but after the general elections they learnt that 200 thousand voters have collected their PVC’s and as at now there are remaining over 400 thousand yet to be collected.

Professor Shehu solicited the assistance of the media as a critical stakeholder in sensitizing voters towards ensuring a free hitch general elections in 2023.

The REC said from their investigation on INEC data base a substantial number of voters are duplicating their registration which is unecessary noting that people think that PVC’S expire which is not the case.

As at now there are 39.9 percent of voters in Kano that duplicate their registration which is a problem.

On the ongoing voter registration which is expected to be closed in June Professor Riskwa charged voters who registered online to go and complete their registration physically at INEC offices across the 44 local governments of Kano state.

He said out of 312 thousand applicants 227 thousand have so far completed their registration.

He charged political parties and the media not to over heat the polity as the ban on campaign is yet to be lifted by the commission.

The REC added that its in conformity with the 2022 electoral act signed by President Muhammad Buhari that compell the commission to start preparation for the general elections noting that campaign for the office of the President and Governors commences from September and October respectively.

Riskwa charged the media and other critical stakeholders to desist from committing electoral offence.
