The Gender Base Violence (GBV) Team, Centre for Information Technology, CITAD has expressed worry over the continuous occurrence of cases of Gender-Based Violence especially, sexual harassment.
Zainab Aminu the program officer who spoke to news men Thursday during a press conference noted that, statistics from March 2022 shows increase in most of the cases hence, the need for government to hastily adopt laws to protect women and girls whom are often the victims.
She noted that cases of rape and other GBV even though under reported still calls for action and as a result, the child protection Bill and the modification of the Kano State penal code should be given due consideration with emphasis on the need to also establish referral and forensic centres for victims.
Statics presented for the Month under review shows an increase of 86% for online harassment, 46% increase for sexual blackmail and 40% increase in cases of school violence while 26% increase was recorded for sexual abuse amongst others.
Aminu, further explained that, monitoring and reporting of these cases have really increased awareness amongst individuals and the society at large and they hope to continue to intensify their efforts in creating more awareness in all areas and communities within the state.
She commend the efforts of the traditional and religious leaders and all stakeholders in intensifying their efforts to creat awareness against GBV and also, special thanks to Federation of Women Lawyers, Kano (FIDA) for their efforts in seeking justice and rehabilitation of survivors so far.
CITAD appeal to parents, relatives and others to always report cases to the various security agencies or directly to them or other sister NGOs as well as to other government agencies such we National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) NOA, NAPTIP or HISBAH etc.
