Imagine a poor patient requesting for N100 million to pay for a kidney transplant operation abroad. Could he or she have received the amount in less than six hours, or even months? Davido jokingly said that he needed N100 million to clear his Rolls Royce from the port, and before you can say Jack Robinson, he raised the amount in less than six hours!

But beyond the fact that the positive response proves Davido’s popularity, let’s also look at the human angle of the issue. Davido actually didn’t need the money because he can afford it. A poor patient looking for money for a life saving kidney transplant is less likely to get this huge amount of money in less than six hours.

The other day, Hausa musician Dauda Rarara requested for one thousand naira from each Nigerian to compose a song for President Buhari, and within hours, he raised over N65 million. And this happened in Northern Nigeria where we everyday hear public service announcements by local radio stations, seeking to raise money for patients awaiting life saving operations. Many of these patients died without getting the badly needed donations.

It is unfortunate that we give our money for the sake vanity and ostentation rather than humanity. Davido was just joking, but he was able to get N100 million from fans and other Nigerians. And these fans would think that helping a super rich artiste to clear his luxury car is of greater priority than saving a life.

Boxing legend Muhammad Ali said that the more you help others, the more you help yourself because you are part of our common humanity. Rarara is one of the richest artistes in Northern Nigeria; so he didn’t need these financial contributions in order to compose a song for Buhari. We pursue wrong priorities for the sake publicity, vanity and ostentation. For me, saving someone else’s life is a greater achievement than helping those who don’t need help. Some guys were proudly displaying bank details of much they gave Rarara while someone is living on borrowed time due to the inability to pay for life saving hospital operation.
