In 1987, Gumi Got 97,000 Dollar Gift, Hands Over To Relatives as Charity

Before Sheikh Abubakar Mahmud Gumi passed away, a renowned Professor of English, Ismaila Ahmad Tsiga authored a book bares the late Shaikh’s childhood upto the time he was about to die.

 

In the Book titled “Where I Stand,” Sheikh Abubakar Gumi narrated to then Dr. Tsiga how, in 1987, during the King Faisal International Award for Services to Islam, late King Fahad of the Saudi Arabia honoured him and Sheikh Ahmad Deedat.

 

He said one of the Nigerian Muslim philanthropists, late Chief Moshood Kashimawo Olawole Abiola aid in sponsoring the trip for the award on Sheikh Abubakar Mahmud Gumi.

 

According to Sheikh Gumi, after his citation and award of a plaque by the Saudi King, the Saudi Arabian Government gave him $97, 000.

 

On returning to Nigeria, Sheikh Gumi gathered his relatives and handed over the whole money to them to share and he did not pick a single Kobo.

 

On 11th September, 1992 the late internationally revered Islamic scholar answered the call of our creator the Almighty Allah. He died in a London hospital when it was heavily raining in Nigeria.

 

His death was a serious shocker to the entire Muslim community as a result of his contribution to Islam and nation-building.

 

His corpse was conveyed to Nigeria inside the presidential jet during the military administration of General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida.

 

Sheikh Abubakar Mahmud Gumi’s funeral prayers took place in Kaduna led by one of his closest disciples and a cleric Sheikh Lawal Abubakar of blessed memory.

Those that attended his funeral were the then President, General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida, Governor of Kano state, Architect Kabiru Ibrahim Gaya, Governor Yahaya Abdulkarim of Sokoto state, Alhaji Ali Saadu Birnin Kudu of Jigawa state and the host Governor, Late Alhaji Muhammad Dabo Lere of Kaduna state.

 

Sheikh Abubakar Mahmud Gumi authored many books among which are “Aqidatussahiha bimawafaqatushsharia.” He also authored a book on Quranic exegesis, “Raddul Azhan Ila Maanil Quran.”

Today, September 11 is exactly 29 years after his death.
