Hepatitis Day: 9 In 10 People Are Ignorant

KNSG will accelerate efforts to meet the target of WHO in the fight to eliminate viral hepatitis in the state.

The Director-General of the State Agency for the control of AIDS, Dr. Sabitu Y. Shu’aibu Shanono disclosed at a one-day sensitization training of Healthcare workers drawn from secondary healthcare facilities across the State as part of the commemoration of world Hepatitis day 2021 with the theme “Hepatitis Can’t-Wait” and the nationally adopted sub-theme “National ownership and financing for viral hepatitis Elimination”.

 

Dr. Shabitu Shanono said World Hepatitis Day is observed annually on 28 July to raise awareness of viral hepatitis, an inflammation of the liver that can cause severe liver disease and cancer.

 

Director-General said 9 in 10 people living with the virus hepatitis are unaware of their status and in every minute two people die as a result of hepatitis-related illness

 

He called on people across the state to take action by raising awareness because the virus could not wait.

Dr. Shanono then urged the participant to step down the training for the benefit of other health workers in their facilities to minimize the scourge of the disease.

 

Earlier, the resource person during the event professor Adamu Alhaji Samaila of internal medicine Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital lamented that the majority of people across the globe don’t know about their status until the damage has been done to the liver that is why hepatitis is widely known as a killer disease.

 

The prof. Stressed the significance of regular screening to detect the virus at the early stage.

 

In a statement by Aminu Bello Sani, the public relations officer of the agency said Professor A A Samaila called on the state government to take immediate action to eliminate hepatitis through sustained political will and a robust preventive health program.
