FG Declares 14 LGs open defecation free in Jigawa

The Federal Government has declared fourteen local Governments free from open defecation in Jigawa.

 

Minister of water resources Engr. Suleiman Adamu disclosed this at the official awarding of ODP certificates to the affected local Governments at Sule-tankarkar.

 

He said the local Governments were declared open defecation free after meeting the requirement of ODF protocol for hygiene promotion.

“Before attaining the ODF status, communities must have eliminated open defecation and imbibed total sanitation practices, which include personal, environmental and domestic hygiene”

 

“communities would have also had 100 percent toilet use and increased ownership and sustainability of hygiene and sanitation services”

 

The local Governments include, Gagarawa, Birniwa,Guri, Sule tankarkar, Gwiwa, Kiyawa, Dutse, Buji, Birnin Kudu,, Taura, Kafin Hausa,Auyo, Jahun.

 

The minister noted that Jigawa state is the only state with fourteen local Government also with over fifty thousand communities and a population of more than three million in fourteen local government areas declared open defecation-free in the country.

 

The minister, therefore, congratulated State Government and people of Jigawa state for the achievements recorded on water sanitation and hygiene.

 

Also, Governor Badaru Abubakar reassured the state government commitment to continue providing portable water , safe and clean environment.

 

He also appreciated the contributions made by International donor agencies especially the United Nations children’s education fund and British Department for International Development on water sanitation and Hygiene.
