A renowned Kano philanthropist, Alhaji Ahmad Idris has sponsored 35 students from Daneji Quarters in Kano Municipal and Gezawa local government areas, also in Kano, to study undergraduate degree programmes in various disciplines at National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN).
Alhaji Ahmad Idris is also the current Accountant General of the Federation (AGF). Additionally, Alhaji Muntari Dangana, another philanthropist, also of Daneji Quarters in Kano, has paid for the education of 10 students from the area in the University.
The students, comprising both males and females were drawn from different sections in Daneji Quarters of Kano Municipal and some parts of Gezawa local government.
The selection of the students was facilitated by Daneji Amintacciya Youth Association (DAYA), a community based organization working on youth empowerment and development in the area.
Speaking at the ceremony in which the students were handed their admission letters to NOUN on Saturday Ist May, 2021 at the Muntari Dangana Building, which is also the Daneji Town Hall, the immediate past Vice-Chancellor of the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN), Prof. Abdalla Uba Adamu, who is from the same Daneji Quarters, urged the beneficiaries to be good ambassadors of Daneji and Kano State in their study at the University,.
He assured that Daneji Amintacciya Youth Association, will continue to pursue sponsorship for the youth in Daneji on a regular basis to accelerate their acquisition of higher education qualifications.
He lauded the flexible nature of NOUN that will enable the beneficiaries to study, while at the same time engaging in the various trades and occupations that Daneji youth are famous for.
Also from Gezawa Local Government, the leader of Gezawa Community Development Association, Barrister Muhammad Sani Yunusa expressed gratitude to the AGF.
“We would like to thank the AGF for sponsoring 20 undergraduate students to study various academic disciplines at NOUN from Gezawa Local Government.
Through this contribution, our youths will have access to education and training that will enable them to contribute to the development of society,” he said
On his part, the Director of NOUN Kano study centre, Mudassir Ahmad Ishaq disclosed that the sponsors had paid all the fees, including tuition, and other financial needs of the students for the period of their study.
He said this is the first sponsorship of its kind since the establishment of the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) and commended the Daneji community for being a leader in this area.
He assured the students that NOUN will not hesitate to provide them with all the necessary school materials so as to kick start their studies.
Earlier in his remark, one of the fathers of the students, Alh. Basiru Daneji thanked the Accountant General of the Federation and Alhaji Muntari Dangana who provided the scholarship for their children, describing them as builders of modern Daneji.
