The Speaker of the Bauchi State House of Assembly Abubakar Y Suleiman has bagged the Federal Ministry of Women Affairs’ 2020 ‘HeforShe’ award of excellence.
Presenting the award to the Speaker during the 20th Anniversary of the UNCR-1325 on Women, Peace and Security organized by the Ministry in partnership with the Defence Headquarters and UN Women at NAF Conference Hall, Abuja, the Minister of Women Affairs Mrs Pauline Tallen congratulated the Speaker for winning the distinguished award which is given to individuals who excelled in bettering the life of womenfolks in the country.

According to the Minister, Abubakar Y Suleiman has excelled in ensuring the wellbeing of women and children in the country, mentioning particularly his many initiatives to empower women and his sponsorship of the Violence Against Persons Prohibition Bill which was subsequently passed into law by the Bauchi State Assembly and assented by the Executive Governor of Bauchi State Senator Bala Abdulkadir Muhammad as some of the giant strides of the Speaker to enhance the lives of women and children.
Mrs Pauline Tallen recalled how she went to the Bauchi State House of Assembly to convey her appreciation and that of President Muhammadu Buhari to the Speaker and Honourable Members for passing the VAPP law in which the Speaker recalled House Members from recess to honour her, saying she was overwhelmed by the gesture and felt so much honoured.
“Once again I commend you and all members of the Bauchi State House of Assembly for enacting the VAPP law and for the honour you have done to me when I visited you.” She said.
In his remarks, the Speaker expressed his appreciation for the recognition of what he described as his little contribution towards the betterment of womenfolk and children.
He thanked the organizers; the Federal Ministry of Women Affairs, United Nations Women and Defence Headquarters and assured them and women of Nigeria that he will continue to dedicate himself for them and other vulnerable members of the society.
Abubakar Y Suleiman who is also the Chairman Conference of Speakers of State Legislatures said he dedicated the award to all honourable members of the Bauchi State House of Assembly.
In a statement by Abdul Ahmad Burra said during the event, an award of excellence was also given to the Executive Governor of Bauchi State Senator Bala Abdulkadir Mohammad for his policies and programmes to better the life of women and children, which the Speaker received on his behalf.
